Intro to Yoga Philosophy: The Ethics of Yoga lead by Kevin Montgomery

Yoga is the art of living practiced and perfected in India more than 5,000 years ago. In approximately 200 AD, Patanjali recorded the foundation of yoga philosophy in The Yoga Sutra. This ancient text contains an eight-fold path – guidelines on how to lead a meaningful and purposeful life. In Sanskrit, this path is called ashtanga, which literally means eight limbs. The practice of yoga is dedicated to creating a union of the body, mind, and spirit. It uses the body and breath to foster awareness of self as an individual being, intimately connected to the unified whole of creation. The eight limbs serve as a prescription for self-discipline and ethical and moral conduct, to restore balance and equanimity, so as to live in peace, health, and harmony with the greater whole.

In this series of workshops, you will learn about :

The YAMAS (Universal Morality). The first limb of yoga is concerned with personal integrity, ethical standards, and how we conduct ourselves in life. The five Yamas are universal practices closely related to the Golden Rule (do unto others as you would have them do unto you.)

And the NIYAMAS (Personal Observances). The second limb is composed of rules prescribed for personal observance. The five Niyamas refer to attitudes we adopt toward ourselves in our code of living.

Understanding the Chakras and the Subtle Body lead by Laura King

Chakras are subtle energy points in the body that act as energy gateways or energy exchange points. It is believed that the chakras vitalize the physical body and influence the physical, emotional, and mental movements of the mind and body. We have several hundred of these energy exchange points within our energetic systems but the most well-known ones are the seven which are etherically connected to the spinal column and head. Through modern physiology we can see that these seven chakras correspond exactly to the seven main nerve ganglia which emanate from the spinal column. The physical body is dependent upon this vital energy flow to maintain optimum well-being. Chakras can become blocked by long-held negative states, rigid thought patterns, negative emotions, toxins, etc. In addition to its other functions, each of the seven main chakras represents a level of consciousness or developmental stage of life.

In this workshop, you will learn how to discover the subtle energetic channels in your body through asana. You will learn how to identify areas of congestion, numbness, and overuse in order to find a sense of openness and bring balance to the whole person.
