Yamas and Niyamas: The Ethical Foundation of Yoga

Yoga is the art of living practiced and perfected in India more than 5,000 years ago. In approximately 200 AD, Patanjali recorded the foundation of yoga philosophy in The Yoga Sutra. This ancient text contains an eight-fold path – guidelines on how to lead a meaningful and purposeful life. In Sanskrit, this path is called ashtanga, which literally means eight limbs. The practice of yoga is dedicated to creating a union of the body, mind, and spirit. It uses the body and breath to foster awareness of self as an individual being, intimately connected to the unified whole of creation. The eight limbs serve as a prescription for self-discipline and ethical and moral conduct, to restore balance and equanimity, so as to live in peace, health, and harmony with the greater whole.

In this series of workshops, you will learn about :

The first limb of yoga, YAMAS (Universal Morality), is concerned with personal integrity, ethical standards, and how we conduct ourselves in life. The five Yamas are universal practices closely related to the Golden Rule (do unto others as you would have them do unto you.)

The second limb, NIYAMAS (Personal Observances), is composed of rules prescribed for personal observance. The five Niyamas refer to attitudes we adopt toward ourselves in our code of living.

Understanding the subtle body is a wonderful way to connect deeply to yourself and dive further into the practice of yoga. This course will cover the Chakras, the Nadis, Vayus, Koshas, and Doshas. Ayurvedic Fall Cleanse

Do you want to add more pep-in-your-step? An Ayurvedic fall cleanse is a great way to reset your digestive and immune systems and gain more energy. Join Ayurvedic Health Coach, Lillian Jacobs for a 10 day Ayurvedic Fall Cleanse.

In our initial 2hr workshop our cleanse community will meet to learn about Ayurvedic cleansing and Ayurvedic lifestyle and diet tips for the fall season. We will then embark together on a 10-day journey of healing and self-discovery through an Ayurvedic kichari cleanse.

Past cleanse participants have experienced: improved immunity, weight loss, more energy, clear skin, restful sleep, healthy digestion and so much more!

What’s included:

An initial 2 hr workshop in which you’ll learn Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle habits to keep you balanced and healthy through the fall season.

A detailed Ayurvedic cleansing manual with day-to-day instructions on the cleanse. This includes recipes, shopping lists (no expensive powders or pill required!), daily instructions, and lifestyle tips.

Access to our private online community where you will receive daily check-ins, additional resources on Ayurvedic living, answers to any questions or concerns, and {last but certainly not least} group support.

Why a group cleanse? Because why cleanse alone when you can cleanse with friends?! A community cleanse will give you accountability to stick with it, you'll have a group to discuss wins and challenges, exchange recipes, etc.

Ayurvedic cleansing is different than most of the cleanses that have become so widely popular in the wellness scene today. Ayurvedic cleansing is about deeply nourishing your body with whole foods, spices, and time-tested stress-relieving lifestyle techniques. Yes, your body will get a detox but it can do so without fasting or restricting your diet. You won't be asked to buy expensive pills or shakes, to not eat solid foods, or to skip meals. You will be asked to cook for yourself, eat whole foods in their natural form, and rest.

Lillian encourages participants to approach the cleanse as 10 days of radical self-care rather than 10 days of radical self-restraint. This will be fun! You'll fill your day with lots of healing rituals and fill your plate with lots of nourishing foods. Some participants find that they even eat more than they're used to, but still reap the benefits of weight loss, increased energy, etc.!

I have a history of disordered eating, is this ok for me? Generally, cleansing isn't recommended in these cases. But if you're interested in partaking the program can be modified so that it's healing for you. Feel free to reach out to Lillian to discuss this more: hi@lillianjacobswellness.com.

Is there anyone that this is not appropriate for? If you're pregnant or breastfeeding cleansing is generally not recommended. You can still join and practice all of the amazing Ayurvedic lifestyle habits that are included in the cleanse. Just be sure to let Lillian know and she'll offer guidance on how to tweak the cleanse to be appropriate for you. Reach out to her at: hi@lillianjacobswellness.com

Redefining Mobility

Mobility can be described as the amount of active capacity one has available to them in any given joint articulation. To be mobile requires you to be strong in deeper ranges of motion. Many conflate the word mobility with flexibility, however these two terms are quite different in their meaning and application. Join Matt Phippen for a deep dive into all things mobility. We will break down what it means, how to leverage it, and find ways of applying it to our Yoga practice.
